At Broken Arrow Public Schools, the safety and well-being of students and staff remain our top priority. To prepare for inclement weather, the district has five snow days built into the instructional calendar. If these snow days are not used, the last day of school will be adjusted to end five days earlier. Additionally, distance learning may be implemented in certain emergencies.
Below is an overview of how closure decisions are made and how families and staff can stay informed:
How Are Decisions Made to Cancel School?
When determining school closures, several factors are evaluated, including:
Amount of snowfall
Condition of residential and thoroughfare roads
Temperature
Ability to clear parking lots and sidewalks
District administrators monitor local weather forecasts closely and travel various roads across the district to assess conditions firsthand. If schools are closed, all after-school activities, including sports and evening events, will also be canceled.
How Will Families Be Notified?
In the event of a closure, families and staff will be notified through:
Automated calls and emails via Thrillshare by Apptegy
District website and social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram @baschools)
Local television news stations
How Does the District Respond to Severe Weather?
Severe Weather (Thunderstorms/Tornadic Activity)
Students may either be dismissed normally, held in place with delayed bus dismissals or kept until parents arrive for pickup.
Families will be notified of any changes via Thrillshare.
Flooding
Transportation will monitor flood-prone areas and communicate directly with impacted families and schools.
Parents will receive updates through Thrillshare about bus delays or inaccessible stops.
Winter Weather (Snow/Ice)
Transportation begins evaluating bus routes as early as 3 a.m.
The district aims to announce closures no later than 5:30 a.m., with updates sent to families no earlier than 6 a.m. through Thrillshare, local news and social media.
All after-school activities, including sports and evening events, will also be canceled.
